What I find really interesting is that there are more and more fantastic vocalists entering the charts who seem to have more ownership over themselves. I can't really explain what I mean by this ... but like, this video has hit the millions and yet there are many things here which just five or ten years ago would have been cut out as soon as success was imminent. The lines under her eyes for example, or the almost awkward movements of her body as she sways in certain parts of the video. Yet more and more these days, things like this are being kept and even celebrated; we are being given more and more access to a very interesting level of artistry and craftsmanship in pop music.
To me, it feels almost like music artists are now more comfortable giving themselves "honestly" or "as a whole" to the public - not just the parts they feel will be accepted. This by itself is an incredibly beautiful thing. But simultaneously, we as the consuming public are becoming more accepting of alternative/more artistic sounds and visuals... I mean in the Top 40 chart alone, we have Sia, Kiesza, Banks, George Ezra, FKA Twigs, Sam Smith, Jungle, Lana Del Rey, Gregory Porter, London Grammar, Paloma Faith... yet every single one of these names - whether visually, sonically or both - are producing things that are very alternative, left-field, or just genuinely bizarre.
It's a pretty weird and exciting time for pop music I think, particularly when you look at what the charts were in like just ten years ago. The diversity we have access to right now is amazing; without even needing to leave the Top 40, we have bubblegum club tunes and massive bass drops sat side by side with thought-provoking, soul-destroyingly beautiful pieces of art. So I know it's quite popular to claim to hate pop music these days, but honestly I am loving every second of the musical journey our culture seems to be experiencing right now. It is producing some truly incredible things and I can't wait to see how this goes on into the future. :)
P.S. I know, I know - TL;DR right? ;) But if you got to the end I'd be interested to hear what you think about it, too.
She almost sounds like Prince in this! OMGosh "amazing" it's something about this song that just gets me, makes me want to go to the beach an just relax all day smiling lol, I love how artist are coming out with "REAL MUSIC" now days, for a minute there it was so touch and go for a moment but it is so refreshing how music is going back to its roots and actually letting musicians be creative and actually make music that will stand the test of times, we have been long waiting for you Jessie and if I could speak for all of us were beyond thankful your here to stay! Don't understand people commenting she's old. I find her very beautiful the way she is, her talent and voice make her sexy. Teenagers used to see extreme makeover chicks in videos and lots of people have a very twisted perception on beauty these days. Fuckin Tv and media slaves
Er.. I see she's getting quite popular these days. I hope her music stays just like this ♥ it would be devastating if she turned into a Taylor Swift... /:
